According to the history of the Kassapo Turtle, it was the past life of the Lord Buddha when he was the Bodhisattva Turtle King. Turtle King means a large size as big as a house living on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean. At that time, a large merchant ship sank in the middle of the ocean. People fled to live on that deserted island. Later, there was starvation, no food, to the point of going crazy and killing each other to get meat to eat. The Turtle King Bodhisattva saw the whole thing. Out of pity, he practiced the highest level of charity and loving-kindness, which is the highest perfection, to help humans survive without having to kill each other. The Turtle King Bodhisattva crawled up the hill, held his breath, and rolled down. When he reached the foot of the hill, he died. Those people used the flesh of the Turtle King Bodhisattva as food and used the shell as a vehicle to return home safely. Later, those people remembered the Turtle King’s kindness and drew a picture to worship for good fortune. And later, it was created as a sacred object in the shape of a turtle with sacred letters and numerals.
